Overclocking is getting more performance out of your computer components by increasing the clock cycles (amount of instructions done in a human second), which are measured in hz, for example, a 2.4 Gigahertz CPU does 2.4 billion operations or instructions in a single human second, BUT you can push it to 3.0 Ghz if your lucky, and get 3 billion operations a second out of your device. Overclocking however has strict limitations based on what the device is, how much overhead room it has for clocking, cooling, and voltage. If any of these are not right, then lets say for a CPU, your PC will be really unstable, and BSOD (Blue screen of death) rather quickly, requiring a restart, if this happens, lower your overclock, increase voltage slightly, or get better cooling. The stock clock cycles and stock cooling are usually good for most CPUs and GPUs, but <b>…<b>

    @builder802 I haven’t spent much money on hardware, really…
That’s why I have to overclock for that extra 30%.

By now, the 8600GT is pretty old, and the Pentium 4 is much older.

I wish I knew what I was doing when it came to computers…. but I have no clue and I don’t want to go blow hundreds of dollars and not know how to use the stuff.

    hahah 3.20 damn!!!

  4. FrosDOwnz says:

@SegasProductions Latest drivers, latest eVGA precision. I don’t know if it works if you don’t have an eVGA subvendered Nvidia Geforce.

  5. FrosDOwnz says:

@titleistD2 I’ll make a new tutorial on this that is clearer, shorter and more to the point.

@LeonScottKiller Your not risking anything unless you increase the voltage. Most processors can easily handle 75-85 celsius and graphic processors can handle 90-150 C (192 to 302 F) without a problem. As long as you have stock cooling or better and you’ve got a decent amount of ventilation it will work.

My Pentium 4 has handled 4+ ghz for 3 years in a row and for about a year or so was running 60-75 C (140-168 F). Still going strong. I never overvolted though, only my RAM b4 and that’s working.

oh okay thx for the reply i got one more noob question can i upgrade a ati radeon 4250 mobility to a 4860 and can i upgrade the cpu to like 3.0 gHz or more and any recomend would be nice

  8. FrosDOwnz says:

@ssdfhX111 A laptop? I dunno, it might be hard.
You could try speedfan, clockgen or setFSB but chances are you won’t get much luck with that CPU

can i over clock the cpu of a compaq presario CQ62 laptop

can i over clock the cpu of a compaq presario CQ62

  11. EMOxPRODUCTION says:

i can’t overclock not with rivatuner or EVGAPrecision

  12. titleistD2 says:

God damn, I only got half of what you said from all the clicking. The mouse is obnoxious.

  13. SegasProductions says:

my evga says failed to initialize NVAPI wrapper

  14. kaosknife123 says:

@FrosDOwnz I’ll try that instead, thanks Fros.

  15. FrosDOwnz says:

@kaosknife123 Maybe you shouldn’t use ATi Tool it hasn’t really been much of a good program for Nvidia cards. Whether you have Nvidia or ATi you can always rely on Rivatuner.

  16. kaosknife123 says:

Whenever I try to run ATITool, my CPU usage goes to 100% and it just doesn’t do anything, is there any way to fix this?

  18. FrosDOwnz says:

@W1zaRDxX Damage can only occur if you exceed the heat or voltage specifications for the processor. Heat and voltage both play a part in electromigration. Basically the stream of electrons occasionally will *pick up* and carry off bits of the metallic compounds in the processor and eventually will destroy the functioning of the processor as a whole. Heat causes this somewhat even with stock settings, but voltage has the most effect (because it’s signal strength). Keep it cool and don’t overvolt.

  19. FrosDOwnz says:

@DarkReaver91 Yes, I’m not really sure since it’s a laptop but you don’t have to worry about damaging anything. Try using the bios (if you start your computer and try pressing keys like enter, del, f1, f2, f10, f11, f12 and you get a bios menu you should be able to overclock like that. Otherwise you will need to use speedfan, clockgen or CPUcool… the difficulty in that is you have to find your PLL for your motherboard… Mine wasn’t listed in any of these programs. I can’t overclock in Windows

  20. FrosDOwnz says:

@T69gio A tutorial on how to overclock your central processing unit and/or your graphics processing unit. They run at a certain clock speed measured in hertz (and computers used to be 1 khz over 60 years ago, now they’re measured in millions and billions of hertz). To increase the speed of the chip, just increase the amount of clock cycles it performs per second. Clock cycles are the tick-tock of computing and instruction handling.

  21. T69gio says:

    wat is this exactly

  22. T69gio says:

    wat is this exacly

@FrosDOwnz can I oc my QosmioX300 11L if yes how much and how?
